This is a monumental, large-flared rim dish from the Xuande reign of the Ming Dynasty, featuring underglaze red decoration with nine dragons. As a premier imperial court artifact from early Ming China, its design features a scalloped, flared rim and a massive, substantial form that embodies the grandeur characteristic of Xuande official kiln wares. The entire surface is adorned with exquisite underglaze red nine-dragon motifs. The central dragon stands powerful and majestic, with meticulously rendered scales and whiskers amidst swirling clouds. Eight auxiliary dragons weave through the clouds around the inner wall, symbolizing prosperity and auspiciousness in an era of glory. The rim is decorated with continuous waves and mountain-and-cliff patterns, depicting dynamic, layered ocean currents. The Xuande underglaze red glaze exhibits a deep, rich copper-red hue with a warm luster, clear gradations achieved through skilled shading, and bold, vigorous brushwork reflecting peak artistic mastery of the Ming dynasty. The body is crafted from the distinctive fine,澄泥 (refined mud) clay unique to the Xuande period, while the foot reveals a dry, matured sand base with natural, deeply penetrated patina from centuries of aging. Due to the extreme complexity of the overlapping patterns and the high rate of loss during firing, surviving pieces in pristine condition are exceptionally rare. This dish remains flawless—free of cracks, chips, color loss, or repairs. With its brilliant, smooth glaze, it combines the standard of Xuande official production, the auspicious symbolism of the nine dragons, and the precious underglaze red technique, making it a piece of immense historical research value and top-tier investment potential for collectors.
