Collection Appreciation
This is a pair of running script couplets by Zuo Zongtang, a renowned statesman of the late Qing Dynasty. Crafted on red paper with gold flecks, they are preserved as matching hanging scrolls. The inscriptions read: "Join me to compose verses of the blue waves," and "Take a raft to journey far with immortal guests." Written on red rice paper sprinkled with gold leaf, the gold speckles are evenly distributed, lending an antique elegance. The calligraphy emulates Yan Luogong's style, featuring powerful, thick strokes, vigorous lines, and a broad, imposing structure that exudes the majestic bearing of a general. The ink is deep black and lustrous, with a fluid, cohesive flow throughout. The right scroll bears the signature "Zuo Zongtang" at the edge, while the bottom of the lower scroll features two matching red seal impressions; the cinnabar paste is aged and rich, and the overall layout is balanced and harmonious. The red paper remains in excellent condition, free from large-scale mold, tears, insect damage, or loss of gold foil, and retains its original mounting. Given the scarcity of surviving calligraphic works by Zuo Zongtang, this pair stands out for its refined text, strong brushwork, blend of scholarly spirit and power, and significant historical value. It is a pristine collector's piece, ideal for both archival study and elegant display in a hall.
