Collection Appreciation
This is a six-petal shallow dish from the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty, produced in an imperial kiln. The yellow glaze was reserved exclusively for the emperor, signifying supreme status. The rim features molded scrolling foliage with beaded edges, creating exquisite layering. The center depicts a lotus bouquet, symbolizing integrity and nobility. Green and ochre overglaze colors contrast against the bright yellow ground, yielding a calm and antique palette. The three-color filling has crisp boundaries, while the thick, lustrous glaze exhibits natural craquelure from age. The base bears the inscription "Made in the Hongzhi Reign of the Great Ming" in bold, archaic calligraphy. The porcelain body is fine-grained and dry-fired, with precise wheel-turning. The piece is complete, free of glaze loss, hairline cracks, or chips, and is in superior condition. Surviving examples of Ming Dynasty yellow-glazed sancai ware are rare, combining imperial ritual significance with scholarly symbolism.
