Collection Appreciation

This is an official kiln Doucai cup from the Chenghua reign of the Ming Dynasty, featuring the "Three Autumns" motif and stamped with the standard six-character square seal "Da Ming Cheng Hua Nian Zhi" on its base. It is a renowned传世 piece of Ming Doucai ware. The vessel boasts a classic flared斗笠 (bamboo hat) shape, with porcelain so thin it resembles paper and glaze as lustrous as jade—light and smooth to the touch. The exterior is outlined in underglaze blue with depictions of orchids, rocks, and small flowers, filled with overglaze yellow, green, and red enamels to create dancing butterflies among the blooms. "Three Autumns" symbolizes the vibrant butterfly-and-flower scenes of the autumn season, rendered with lively elegance. Characteristic of Chenghua Doucai, this piece combines underglaze blue with five-color overglaze enamels, achieving soft, muted tones with precise application and delicate, refined lines. Rare surviving examples of the Three Autumns Cup were imperial studio items used by the Ming court for scholarly pursuits. They perfectly embody the minimalist aesthetic of the era and are universally recognized as top-tier treasures in ancient ceramics collection, offering exceptional value for ceramic工艺 research, historical study, and investment.
