Collection Appreciation

This bowl, an official kiln gem-red glazed vessel from the early Qing Dynasty Yongzheng period, exemplifies the pinnacle of high-temperature copper-red glaze technology—a process of exceptional complexity. Crafted using a Langyao red firing system with copper as the colorant, it required a single reduction firing at temperatures exceeding 1300°C. Copper-red glazes are highly sensitive to kiln temperature and atmosphere; even minor deviations can result in grayish tones, running glaze, or mottled discoloration, making surviving examples exceptionally rare.

The glazing process was meticulous: the exterior features a thick, lustrous gem-red glaze applied through multiple dipping stages to build up a rich, full layer. The surface is smooth and uniform, displaying a warm, deep red hue with a subdued, refined glow reminiscent of polished rubies. At the rim, natural glaze flow reveals a neat white border—the classic "lampwick edge"—while the transition from rim to foot wall remains soft and even, free of glaze drips or imperfections. The foot ring is cleanly trimmed, showcasing the potter's precise control over glaze application. The interior is coated in a pure, translucent white glaze, creating a striking yet elegant contrast with the exterior red.

The vessel's lines are graceful and well-proportioned, with finely refined porcelain body that is dense, thin, and durable. The base is neatly trimmed and bears the six-character regular script mark "Da Qing Yongzheng Nian Zhi" (Made during the Yongzheng Reign of the Great Qing), confirming its status as an imperial kiln product. During the Yongzheng reign, standards for red-glaze production were extremely strict. This bowl, with its perfectly uniform glaze color, flawless form, and impeccable craftsmanship, offers invaluable insight into the advanced techniques of glaze formulation, temperature control, and shaping employed by imperial kilns.
