Collection Appreciation

This work is a running script hanging scroll from the year 1996 (Year of Bingzi), created in ink on paper, measuring 66×134 cm. It represents a classic masterpiece from Qi Gong's mature late period.

Created when Qi Gong was 83 years old, the calligraphy demonstrates his perfected brushwork and artistic cultivation. He wrote this piece specifically for his friend Comrade Feng Bing, inscribing a famous verse by the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Chengji.

The entire composition adheres strictly to the unique principles of "Qi Style." The brushwork is clean and decisive, utilizing centered strokes that are warm and full. The strokes are slender yet strong and evenly balanced, while the character structures are elongated and open, arranged with spacious harmony. Both character spacing and line spacing are composed with ease and elegance, avoiding any sense of crowding or disorder. The ink tones are uniform, and the lines are smooth and rounded, blending the formal rigor of regular script with the fluid grace of running script. This exemplifies the signature style of "Qi Style"—elegant, refined, gentle, and harmonious.

The text features an exquisite verse from the Tang Dynasty, creating a profound artistic atmosphere. With complete dating, dedication, and seals, the work has a clear provenance, offering both aesthetic value and significance as a record of scholarly exchange. In his later years, Qi Gong's calligraphic skill reached its peak, free of any pretension or agitation, radiating the refined spirit of a scholar. The work is of moderate size and in excellent condition. The interplay between the poem, calligraphy, and inscription makes this a premier example of modern and contemporary master calligraphy, highly valued by collectors and stable in market recognition.
