Collection Appreciation

This gilt-bronze Amitayus Buddha statue, dating from the early Qing Dynasty's Kangxi reign and standing 42 cm tall, is a masterpiece of imperial craftsmanship. The base bears an inscription marking its 83rd year of creation, establishing it as a benchmark for Buddhist statues produced during the Kangxi era. Crafted with thick-walled bronze and fully gilded in pure gold, the statue boasts a rich, lustrous finish that has remained radiant for centuries. Adorned with an elaborate crown studded with various gemstones, the figure features a full, serene face with gentle, compassionate eyes, embodying the dignified elegance of imperial artistry. The hands rest at the abdomen in the Dhyana Mudra, holding a kalasha (vase), while the figure sits in the standard lotus position upon a double-layered upturned lotus pedestal. The lotus petals are plump and three-dimensional, intricately carved in layered detail, while the flowing drapery folds naturally, showcasing exquisite sculptural depth. As a symbol of longevity and well-being, this Amitayus Buddha was a central object of worship for the Qing imperial family. Complete, large-scale pieces commissioned by the imperial court are exceptionally rare.
