This exquisite hanging scroll, "Litchi in an Ancient Ding Vessel," is a masterpiece by Yu Feian, a renowned master of meticulous gongbi and rich-color painting. The work belongs to the traditional genre of ancient vessels and flowers/birds. The intricate patterns on the ancient bronze ding are rendered with precise lines; its three legs feature dignified, classical carvings. Inside the vessel, ripe litchis are piled high—their deep red flesh appears plump and round, with skin textures meticulously detailed, while vibrant green leaves show distinct layers. Several branches of litchis cascade toward the bottom of the composition, laden with fruit arranged in a balanced, harmonious rhythm.

A long running-script inscription on the right records the artist's state of mind, accompanied by two carved seals by Yu Feian himself. The calligraphy, painting, and seals complement each other perfectly. Litchis symbolize great auspiciousness and abundant prosperity, while the ancient ding represents a solid foundation. Together, they convey wishes for good fortune and wealth. Yu Feian's gongbi technique is consummate: his lines are vigorous and even, and his colors are thick yet warm and lustrous, blending the precision of Song dynasty court painting with modern aesthetics. The overall composition is full and stable, executed with rigorous yet elegant brushwork. This piece captures both the refined atmosphere of scholar's offerings and the auspicious symbolism of attracting wealth, making it equally suitable for collection and display.
