Collection Appreciation

This pair of Republic of China era Famille Rose landscape vases with elephant-head handles is preserved in excellent condition. Each vase stands 22.3cm tall.

Featuring an elegant silhouette with a slender neck and rounded belly, the vases are adorned with golden beast-elephant head handles on both sides. The rim and foot are decorated with intricate gilded brocade patterns. The body showcases a delicate Famille Rose painting of a snowy mountain scene at Baqiao Bridge. Rendered in subtle shades of black, white, and gray, the artwork captures a vast winter landscape: snow-covered distant mountains, bare trees in the cold wind, and a traveler riding a donkey across the bridge. The composition offers deep spatial layers and refined light-and-shadow effects, embodying the expressive spirit of traditional Chinese landscape painting. Accompanying calligraphy and poetry complement the imagery, enhancing its scholarly elegance.

Although Hongxian-era porcelain from the Republic of China was produced for only a short time, it inherited the high standards of late Qing imperial kilns. This well-preserved pair features a smooth glaze, intact colors, and exceptional artistic skill, reflecting the legacy of the renowned "Eight Friends of Zhushan." Such matching pairs are rare; the snowy theme symbolizes peace and prosperity. These vases are highly prized by collectors for their aesthetic appeal and significance in the study of modern ceramic history.
