Collection Appreciation

This cup, a classic example of Yongle-era imperial blue-and-white porcelain, features the iconic shape with a flared rim, curved belly, and ring foot. Its balanced weight provides a satisfying hand-held feel. The exterior is adorned with scrolling floral motifs painted in cobalt blue (sumali), characterized by fluid lines, rich and verdant coloration, natural diffusion, and iron spots that penetrate the body—embodying the authentic antiquity of Yongle wares. The rim is decorated with dotted beading, while the base features scrolling vine patterns, creating a clear hierarchy and layered composition. The body is fine-grained and dense, the glaze lustrous and thick, with natural red oxidation visible on the exposed foot. This piece represents the pinnacle of early Ming imperial ceramic craftsmanship. Rarely found today, it is a prized item for blue-and-white collectors and commands exceptional value at auctions.
