Collection Appreciation

This large blue-and-white jar features a majestic beast-head handle and intricate dragon motifs. Its form is robust and substantial, with a short neck that flares outward, full rounded shoulders, a bulging belly that tapers gently toward the base. A three-dimensional beast-head handle adorns one side of the shoulder, enhancing its imposing presence.

The base is unmarked with a rough, dry sandy texture, showing clear turning marks and traces of original clay preparation typical of ancient ceramics.

Glazed in a warm, thick white enamel, the cobalt blue decoration is rich, deep, and layered. The body is divided into distinct decorative zones: the neck displays wave patterns; the shoulder is encircled by scrolling peony vines; the main belly depicts a powerful dragon traversing clouds, its scales finely detailed and vigorous, whiskers flowing dynamically amidst swirling auspicious clouds. This dragon motif symbolizes authority and good fortune. Near the base, stylized lotus petal bands are neatly segmented.

Executed with bold, free brushwork and strong lines, the composition is balanced and grand, with striking blue-and-white contrast. Exuding profound historical charm, this large-scale piece combines display appeal with collectible value—a commanding masterpiece of traditional dragon-decorated blue-and-white porcelain.
