Collection Appreciation

This is a classic Kangxi imperial official kiln meal bowl. It features a flared rim, curved belly, and a perfectly round ring foot. The body is made of fine, pure white porcelain known colloquially as "glutinous rice paste," with a smooth and lustrous glaze. Both the interior and exterior are decorated in wucai (five-color) style with dragon and phoenix motifs intertwined with scrolling floral patterns, symbolizing auspicious harmony between the dragon and phoenix. Known as "hard color" due to its vivid mineral pigments, the palette features rich, bright hues where reds, greens, and blues harmonize beautifully, executed with bold, crisp brushwork. The base bears a standard regular script inscription from the reign period, written with neat precision. Dragons and phoenixes were exclusive imperial symbols; this bowl was used daily within the palace. Kangxi wucai holds a significant place in the history of Chinese polychrome ceramics, marking a departure from Ming dynasty styles with more dynamic and expressive painting. Complete sets surviving today are extremely rare, making even single pieces in excellent condition highly valuable artifacts for studying early wucai techniques.
